Losing a Generation
Their visit was a very telling and sobering sign of the plight our young children are facing today. Over the years, Chicago has seen more than its fair share of violence, and the city's youth have fallen victim to senseless deaths with no apparent end in sight.
An-Janette Albert, the mother of the young honor student Derrion Albert, who was horrifically beaten to death on his way home from school, spoke out on the level of fear that's crippling people in communities. It's fear, she says, that's keeping parents and adults alike from stepping out and working with those who need the type of guidance and direction that can keep random acts of violence such as this brutal beating from occurring.
We cannot afford to lose another generation to poverty, disease, apathy or even fear. When we fail to help lead our children in the way they should go, we in essence fail ourselves.
If we do not bear the task of teaching and leading our own children, my fear is that we are doomed to relive these atrocious acts.
Listen to the mother speak.
