In an exclusive conversation, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Michael Mullen describes the military that the next U.S. president will inherit. Sportswriter David Zirin, author of A People's History of Sports in the United States, says that sports and politics do not exist in different worlds.

Adm. Michael Mullen became Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman in '07. As such, he's the principal military advisor to the president, defense secretary and the National Security and Homeland Security Councils. He previously served as Naval Operations chief, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe and the Allied Joint Force Command Naples and Vice Chief of Naval Operations. A Los Angeles native, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and completed the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program.
