Christian Scott
airdate December 22, 2006
Blending jazz, rock and funk, Christian Scott has been pegged as one of the hottest new stars to emerge on the jazz scene. His major label debut, "Rewind That," earned a Grammy nod and opened the doors to collaborations with Prince and Randy Jackson. The New Orleans native began playing the trumpet at age 12, studied his craft at the Berklee College of Music—from which he graduated earlier than the average student—and began playing on the road at 16. "Anthem" is Scott's highly anticipated sophomore CD.
Christian Scott
Tavis: Christian Scott is a Grammy-nominated jazz artist and acclaimed trumpeter who was kind enough to fly in to play a little Christmas music for us tonight. His most recent CD is called "Rewind That," which would make for an excellent gift. He paid me to say that - no, just teasing. Before we get to the music, though, Christian, nice to have you back on the program.
Christian Scott: Thank you.
Tavis: I got a minute to ask you three quick questions, and I want to get out of the way of the song. One, new trumpet. When you were here last, you were telling me about this thing you were having made for you. Hold it up and let me see it.
Scott: It's a new horn. This is called Christian Scott's Katrina made by Edwards. It's got my signature bell on it, because I play with warm air, and I hold my head down when I play. I guess it sounds good. I've just had it for a couple of months, so I'm still getting used to it.
Tavis: Still working that out? I'll be judge of how good it sounds.
Scott: Okay.
Tavis: In about two minutes (laughter). Second thing is, since you were last here, Grammy nomination for this thing. Congratulations on that.
Scott: Appreciate that.
Tavis: How does that feel?
Scott: Feels great, man. On the first one, I'm like, "I didn't expect this to happen." You know, it's one of those things that could never happen. I'm really, really excited.
Tavis: Well, congratulations. Grammy on the first one. And finally, how's your momma doing?
Scott: She's good, yeah.
Tavis: You're from New Orleans.
Scott: Yes, sir.
Tavis: Family is good?
Scott: Yeah, everybody's good. They're trying to get the houses back together, so it's working.
Tavis: Well, I could talk to Christian for a while. He's been on the show before, but I want to make way for the music. Here is Christian Scott and his version of the holiday classic, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Enjoy. Good night from Los Angeles; Happy Holidays, and keep the faith. Maestro?
